WEBB COUNTY, TX (KGNS) - Since the start of the year, Webb County has hit the ground running on some projects that needed to be complete such as the detox facility which held a ribbon cutting event on Jan. 22.
The work does not stop there, as the county continues work on other projects.
Webb County is one of the biggest counties in the State of Texas with over 260,000 residents.
County Judge Tano Tijerina said he continues to work on multiple projects in 2024 that were started in previous years.
“We started off with finishing a goal with opening up the new detox facility, so we are proud of that,” said Judge Tijerina. “The one that has been the loudest of all and that was my platform in 2010 and 2014 was the bridge. The 4/5 bridge is very important to me.”
According to Judge Tijerina, the detox facility had been in the works for almost five years before it came to fruition.
This facility helps 24 residents at a time, detoxifying from any type of addiction.
“The 4/5 bridge is extremely important,” said Judge Tijerina. “We have been working quietly we have been moving quietly. We’ve been moving mountains. So, we just looking for the president to sign that presidential permit.”
Early January, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz came to Laredo. During his visit he spoke with Tijerina about the back and forth going on in Washington that could result in the presidential permits being signed.
In addition, locally they are trying to negotiate a contract with South Webb County Bridge, the entity they are working with. Once they agree they will work with the city of Laredo on the highly anticipated international bridge.
“Within five years from now, we are going to almost double our truck traffic and so we need that help,” said Judge Tijerina. “We should not be confined to one area. We should be diversifying the way that everything else is moving and growing in Webb County.”
Later in 2024, another big project is set to be compete which is the new Webb County Sheriff’s Office Administrative Building in downtown Laredo.
The over 53,000 square feet building was set to open in March of 2023.
“We are almost done with that we had some hiccups because of the rain as far as finishing it out. But you know what it’s getting there,” said Judge Tijerina. “We should be finishing that out by, or they should be moving in by February or March latest. Let’s just say late March.”
Judge Tijerina goes on to say their biggest and most costly project now is the Webb County Fairgrounds.
This venue is being renovated in different phases.
Since there have been some delays with renovation, the judge said they have seen prices of materials go up in the past few years.
Judge Tijerina said they are trying to find ways that will not affect taxpayers nor affect the county budget.
All in all, there are projects that are expected to be completed this year and for others this year will pave the way to achieve those goals in the coming years.
“2024 watch out here we come cause Webb County am going to stop,” said Judge Tijerina.
Judge Tijerina said public health is very important and this year they are starting to work on the south Webb County medical facility which will bring these vital services closer to the residents in those areas.
