LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - The City of Laredo has entered phase three of its water conservation plan.

Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino announced the decision after the Amistad Water Reservoir, one of the two water sources that supplies Laredo, was reportedly at 20 percent capacity.

So far, the City of Laredo’s Water Treatment Plant is at 90 percent operation.

If the measure is still in place over the next few days, Doctor Trevino said he will need to declare a state of emergency for the city.

In a statement to KGNS, the mayor said, “As the city is now in a stage three level, we will institute further water mitigation measures to protect the health and safety of the community. This includes a more restrictive irrigation schedule and limits on non-essential uses of water. The key is for the public to practice responsible water usage. Further mitigation is being considered and including an emergency declaration if stage three measures are ineffective.”

Recently, the City of Laredo was under stage two of its water conservation plan which included an irrigation schedule for residents.

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - While school is out for the summer, the efforts to make sure that every child is well fed continues to go strong.

As students prepare for their summer vacation, Laredo ISD will be providing healthy meals to students and families in need.

LISD will start serving meals on May 29 and will continue into July 19.

Last year, over 144,000 meals were provided to children and this year the goal is to surpass last year’s quota.

Roberto Cuellar, LISD’s Director of the Child Nutrition Program explains that all children are welcome to grab a meal regardless of what age, school district, or even the city that they live in.

“That is the biggest concern, the hunger issue, but one great thing is that we have many locations where parents can take their children, not only schools but non-school sites,” said Cuellar. “Because we do know that about one in every five children in Texas do suffer from hunger. "

LISD will have over 60 sites set up throughout the city of Laredo.

Cuellar assured that the sites are set up so that students can walk to the location to receive a free meal.

Laredo Police remind parents about house party laws ahead of graduation season

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - With thousands of Laredo-area students expected to celebrate getting their high school diploma, law enforcement is asking the community to help prevent the festivities from turning into tragedies.

During graduation season, the Laredo Police Department receives reports of house parties involving underage drinking.

With the purpose of preventing deadly crashes involving minors, the police department is reminding parents and guardians that providing alcohol to minors is illegal.

According to Investigator Joe Baeza, some parents may have misconceptions believing that it’s ok if there’s adult supervision, but that is false. If an adult allows teens to drink on their property or provides alcohol to a minor, they could face a fine of up to $4,000, lose their license and even spend up to a year in jail.

Investigator Baeza said that the penalties could increase if a teen ends up hurting themselves or others while driving drunk.

“If an underage minor leaves a house party and is intoxicated; you provided the alcohol on your house, your residence and your property,” said Baeza. “They go off and they get into an accident, hurt somebody, kill somebody, cause serious damage driving to somebody’s house or property, you could held civilly liable for allowing that underage minor for drinking on your property.”

Baeza adds that police officers will be out in full force looking for some potential signs of house parties involving minors as well as drunk drivers on the roads.

According to Baeza, the police department has seen an increase in DWI arrests this year compared to last year.

Police recommend safe celebrations without alcohol but instead live music and maybe even a trip out of town.
