LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - It has been a year since former Border Patrol agent Ronald Anthony Burgos Aviles was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of a woman and their son, Dominic. On Wednesday, July 10, the District Attorney for Webb and Zapata County reflected on this significant case.
Isidro Alaniz, the District Attorney, stated that this case has been one of the greatest challenges of his career. The state was seeking the death penalty, but the jury sentenced Burgos to life in prison. The trial lasted nearly a month in 2023.
Burgos is currently appealing his case at the 8th Court of Appeals in El Paso. Alaniz remains confident in the verdict’s affirmation. “We feel confident that the Court of Appeals will affirm his verdict, just like the Juan David Ortiz verdict was affirmed by the 13th Court of Appeals,” Alaniz added. “I look forward to the case of Burgos going to the Appellate Court and being affirmed as well.”
The case was handled at the 49th District Court.
