LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Border Patrol agents captured four undocumented immigrants crossing into the country illegally.

One of the people taken in was Antonio Villanueva-Acuna who is a member of a prison gang.

He has previous arrest warrants for multiple felonies, which include possession of firearm, aggravated assault, DWI, and deportations.

He’s being processed and charged with re-entry into the United States.

Congressman Cuellar weighs in on migrants crossing into Eagle Pass

EAGLE PASS, TX (KGNS) - Large groups of migrants mostly from Venezuela continue to arrive at the U.S.-Mexico Border asking for asylum.

Video showed Venezuelan migrants making their way across the Rio Grande into Eagle Pass where they await processing.

Large numbers of migrants have been crossing into the United States from Mexico.

Drone video captured migrants crossing, sometimes dozens at a time and many with small children.

Once on U.S. Soil, they turn themselves into border officials for processing.

Congressman Henry Cuellar explains what needs to be done to fix the problem.

“What we see right now is a problem in the sense, you got large numbers of people coming from Venezuela, and other places that we cannot deport back. They know we cannot deport them back, so that’s why they’re coming in large numbers, that’s why the criminal organizations are promoting ‘hey, come over, you’re going to get over here.” Said Cuellar.

“Border Patrol right now has 23,000 in custody. That’s overloaded, so if you come in, you have a seven-percent chance that you’re going to be held, and you got a 93% you’re going to be released, so it’s a good deal for them to come in. The only way we can make this stop is that we do what President Obama and Trump did in 2015 and 2019, get Mexico and the other countries to do a lot more. If you look at what happened during the surge under President Obama, what we saw that was just simply that Mexico put the national guard and their military to stop people and the same thing in 2019.”

Hundreds of migrants who were stranded on a cargo train in Mexico were evacuated by police.

The freight train they were traveling on top of abruptly stopped amid the ongoing suspension of dozens of northbound trains over fears around migrant safety.

Roughly 60 northbound cargo trains run by Mexico’s Ferromex were stopped last week after about half a dozen migrants suffered death or injury.

The company later said it restarted some routes where there was no known quote “Heightened risk.”

KGNS On Your Side: Laredo Housing Finance Corp. takes over Hamilton Senior Residence

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The Laredo Housing Finance Corporation is temporarily taking over the Hamilton Senior Residence after the former management company, Capstone Management, ended its contract.

On August 31, 2023, Capstone Management, which had been running the Hamilton hotel since 2001, terminated its contract with the Laredo Housing Finance Corporation due to its inability to fund operations.

Since that time, the City of Laredo has entered into a contract with the corporation to assist with operations to the tune of $65K.

Before Capstone’s departure, KGNS reported on numerous complaints made by Hamilton residents like Larry Blackwell.

Blackwell, who has lived in Hamilton for two years, told KGNS in April 2023 about his complaints after reaching a boiling point with issues like security, air conditioning, and pests.

Fast forward to September, Blackwell and many tenants we spoke to are far from concerned now that the former management company is out and the corporation and city are in.

“Thank you,” said Blackwell. “Absolutely, thank you! We’re glad (the corporation) came. I haven’t talked to anyone that’s disappointed,” he added.

Blackwell said the response time to tenants’ concerns is day and night compared to prior management.

“It’s been operated better. It’s been maintained better, and I’m glad it happened,” he added.

The corporation is now the primary owner of Hamilton.

The city provides support services to the corporation such as funding to help with capital improvements, like repairs to the a/c and other necessary upgrades.

When asked what improvements he’d like to see, Blackwell agreed that the a/c was at the top of his list.

“The air conditioner seems to be in terrible shape. There are some pieces of it that need to be replaced. The other thing is the building itself; the windows are rotting, [and] then, of course, the pest control. The pest control is a big problem here,” Blackwell said.

In a statement to KGNS, the city said it is also helping the corporation seek and obtain a new management company for the Hamilton apartment complex.

The corporation is a non-profit public corporation established by the city’s governing board.
