Local heroes recognized for courageous shark attack rescue on the Fourth of July

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A few weeks ago, what began as a day of celebration at the beach turned into a life-saving mission for a group of friends. However, on Tuesday morning, these local heroes were honored for their bravery.

Ignacio de la Miyar, who has a background in lifeguarding and water instruction, recounted the moment he realized a swimmer, Tabitha Sullivent, was in danger. “All of a sudden I heard a scream, and I noticed that people were exiting the water, and there’s commotion in the waves, and I ran that way thinking it was a distressed swimmer,” said de la Miyar. It wasn’t until he was swimming toward her that he realized a shark was in the water.

With the help of his friends, Amando and Jesse, de la Miyar was able to pull the wounded Sullivent out of the water, an effort that quickly made national headlines. Reflecting on the rescue, de la Miyar said, “Amando and Jesse showing up I think that was just another push for me to keep going. They as well kept going, so team effort, teamwork. We grabbed her, went ahead and brought her back to the edge. I think it was just a grab and go for us. Not too much thought was put into it.”

On Tuesday, de la Miyar, Jesse Villarreal, and Jose Brisegno were celebrated for their heroism by Council Member Dr. Tyler King and Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño. Dr. King, who was in Oklahoma for Army Reserve training when he heard the news, expressed his pride, saying, “Few hours later I see people from Laredo sharing, sharing, Ignacio and Miyar, and what, that’s Coach Nacho. I was really proud to tell some of my fellow soldiers in Oklahoma, that’s my daughter’s swim coach from Laredo, Texas. So, you know because when these types of things happen, it’s not just Laredoans who are proud, it’s the whole country who’s proud.”

Despite the recognition, de la Miyar humbly downplayed his actions, saying, “I see it more of a tragedy and so I don’t want attention, or I don’t see I need the attention, or we need the attention. For us, I think it was just a grab and go.” Dr. King added that Laredoans are resilient people who often do a lot with very little, and this rescue is a testament to that spirit.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The second day of the National Democratic Convention in Chicago has ended, with attendees from around the country, including some from Laredo.

Thousands of democratic followers showed their support for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Laredoan Alejandro Garcia is in Chicago attending the convention.

“I just want to say how excited I am to be from Laredo and to be here. I understand the historical nature of this,” said Garcia.

Garcia continued saying how seeing his political heroes take the spotlight was a dream come true.

Garcia added, “I’m just hoping to be able to make my family and other people in Laredo proud cause these opportunities do not come to anyone and I’m just happy to represent the 956.”

At the convention, Garcia witnessed the tight security in and around the building.

Being from the border, Garcia anticipated both democratic leaders touch on border security, national healthcare and individual rights.

“I want to hear her plan about healthcare and how she’ll layer it in helping all these people and how it will help my family. We have heard her say this over and over again, which is reproductive freedom. Laredo is in Texas, and the state has extreme abortion bans, obligating so many people to flee in case of emergencies or even pregnancy and that is not right,” said Garcia.

U.S. Congressman, democrat and Laredoan, Henry Cuellar, shared his thoughts despite not being able to attend the convention.

Cuellar expects Harris to repeat former President Obama’s formula relating to international conflicts but hopes that both democratic nominees visit the border very soon.

“We’ll hear from our former presidents, we did hear from Hillary Clinton, the Secretary of State, Obama, former President Clinton and of course, the Vice President nominee, Tim Walz. I have served with Tim Walz, he is a good man, and the way you see him is the way he was as a member of Congress,” said Cuellar.

According to a report, 50 thousand people attended the Republican National Convention, where Donald Trump accepted his party’s formal presidential nomination.

It is expected that the same number of attendees will also reach this political event.

The 4-day Democratic National Convention ends on Thursday, August 22nd, it is expected that Harris will formally accept the presidential nomination.
