LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - KGNS weather anchor, Yolanda Villarreal, shared a stunning picture with viewers on Thursday, January 2, showing a rare and amazing cloud formation. The image had many wondering if it was a painting or a scene of the ocean, but Yolanda explained it was a real cloud called an asperitas cloud.

Yolanda explained that asperitas clouds happen when warm air moves over cooler air, creating waves in the sky. Different winds at the cloud base also make the clouds look like waves or ripples.

These clouds are often seen after storms, and Yolanda said viewers might have spotted them in the sky the day before.

“We’re also going to see more strange clouds with another strong cold front coming in next week, bringing cloudy skies,” Yolanda added, encouraging viewers to keep watching for more unusual weather.

Asperitas clouds are a rare and beautiful sight, showing how active and changing our weather can be.
