Zapata County primary election results

ZAPATA COUNTY, TX. (KGNS) - It wasn’t just a busy election season for Webb County but also for voters in Zapata County.

The race for Zapata County Sheriff saw three people vying for the seat, two from the Democrat side and one from the Republican.

Candidate Ramon Montes on the Democratic side got 52 percent over incumbent Raymundo Del Bosque.

It looks like Ramon will face Republican Wanda Cuellar-Garcia in the November election.

Meanwhile, in the race for Zapata County Tax Assessor Collector, Delia Mondoza got 67 percent of the votes over Leticia Salinas’ 33 percent.

In the race for Zapata County Constable Pct. 3, Erika Martinez got 61 percent of the votes compared to Stevan Ramos who only received 39 percent.

Zapata County Constable Pct. 1 candidate Mario Garcia who was running unopposed on the Democratic side received 677 votes.

Man injured after car crashes into central Laredo home

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - A senior citizen is injured after a car crashed into his home Wednesday afternoon.

According to Laredo Police, the crash was reported at around 1:49 p.m. near the 1300 block of Ford Ct.

Police say a 72-year-old man was inside the home when a 2002 gray Mercury Sable crashed into the house.

The female driver stayed at the scene until officials arrived.

The elderly man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the case remains under investigation.

Driver crashes into fence and hits man in his own yard, Laredo Police say

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - A man is hospitalized after a driver crashed into his property, and dragged him to the house next-door.

The incident was reported on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the 4500 block of Emma Lane.

According to Laredo Police, a 2020 white Chevy Camaro crashed into a backyard fence.

The driver struck the victim, identified as 51-year-old Jose Luis Lopez who was in the backyard at the time, and dragged him to his next-door neighbor’s yard.

Rodolfo Ramos, the victim’s son-in-law said that when paramedics arrived, Lopez was still underneath the car.

Ramos said his father-in-law, broke his back, legs and was taken to a San Antonio hospital.

Police say the 25-year-old driver said that he tried to avoid hitting a vehicle by pressing on the brakes, but pressed on the gas resulting in the crash.

The driver was cited for failure to control speed and the crash remains under investigation.

Super Tuesday primaries 2024 results and highlights

WEBB COUNTY, TX . (KGNS) - Super Tuesday elections brought out thousands of voters across Texas voting for not only the presidential election, but also several state, district, federal and local races.

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump won their Texas primaries on Tuesday, propelling them closer to a rematch in the November election.

Here in Webb County, all eyes were on the race for Webb County Sheriff as five candidates were on the ballot, but two familiar faces are taking the lead.

While the race was close, it looks like it would head into a runoff.

Meanwhile, the race for U.S. House District 28 saw four Republicans go at it with Jay Furman and Lazaro Garza taking the lead which could see another runoff election. The winner of that race will face incumbent Henry Cuellar who was running unopposed on the Democrat side.

Other races on the ballot such as Webb County Attorney, Webb County Tax Assessor Collector and Webb County Constable saw the incumbent with the most percentage of the votes.

Candidates who did not get 50 percent of the votes will head into a runoff election.

Webb County Elections Administration has said that runoffs are scheduled for May 28.

Primary Election Day: Make your vote count

Webb County, TX. (KGNS) - Voting machines are back up and running in Webb County after a temporary countywide technical issue.

On Friday morning at around 9 a.m. local voters were saying they were trying to vote but the systems were down.

KGNS News spoke to a voter who did not want to be on camera who stated that he traveled from Lomas Del Sur to vote but was not able to cast his vote.

KGNS reached out to the Webb County Election’s Administrator Jose Luis Castillo for comment, he said that the reason for the issues with the electrical voter machines was due to a software glitch.

According to Castillo, the systems were down for about 45 to 50 minutes.

Castillo assures the community that during this time neither the system or votes were compromised or in jeopardy.

Castillo believes the glitch was caused due to the extra Leap Year Day.

Due to the inconvenience, the elections office has extended its hours until 9 p.m. Friday.

As of 9:40 a.m. a voter stated that the systems are up and running.

Facebook and Instagram experiencing issues

(Gray News) -If you are experiencing issues logging into Facebook or Instagram, you are not alone.

An apparent outage has affected a few of tech company Meta’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and Messenger.

According to DownDetector, as of 10:45 a.m., there have been about 359,270 reports of users experiencing issues with Facebook. The most common issue appears to be users have been logged out of their accounts and are unable to log back in.

There are about 47,432 reports of issues affecting Instagram and 8,037 reports of problems with Messenger.

The reported issues appear to have begun at about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

At this time, the cause of the outages is unknown.

Deadly crash reported at Laredo bridge, police say

LAREDO, TX (KGNS) - An elderly man is dead following a crash at a Laredo bridge early Tuesday morning.

The crash happened on Mar. 5, 2024 at around 6 a.m. on the U.S. side of the Lincoln Juarez Bridge, also known as bridge two.

According to Laredo Police, the driver of a pick-up truck crashed into the guardrails and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police say the driver was identified as Felipe Ovalle Cruz, 82, who was coming into the U.S. from Mexico.

The LPD Crash Team is at the scene and the investigation remains ongoing.

Police say, at this time, there are no expected closures at the bridge.
