BROWNSVILLE, Tx. (KGNS) - A routine search led to the discovery of fentanyl and methamphetamine as well as the arrest of a 35-year-old person on federal drug trafficking charges.

CBP agents at the Brownsville Bridge allegedly found 3.1 kilograms of fentanyl as well as 1.1 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in plastic plates supposedly containing frozen meat, said the lieutenant of the Narcotics Unit at the aforementioned border bridge.

The CBP agent at the B&M Bridge stopped a 2011 Ford F-150 attempting to cross into Brownsville with several different merchandise around 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday.

“While speaking with the driver, CPB Sergeant Crawford observed criminal indicators consistent with drug trafficking,” he said, subsequently sending his K-9 partner, Eddie, to sniff the vehicle outdoors and K-9 Eddie alerted about the smell of narcotics.”

Crawford found refrigerated bags with several trays of frozen meat which, when opened, contained packages of pills positive for fentanyl and methamphetamine in the aforementioned quantities and after a more exhaustive investigation.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - In less than two weeks, Laredo residents will have the opportunity to witness a rare celestial event amid the historic charm of downtown Laredo. Casa Ortiz is set to host a Solar Eclipse Watch Party on April 8th, running from noon to 2 p.m.

The Great American Eclipse will cast its shadow across 13 U.S. states, including Texas. While Laredo won’t experience the full eclipse, locals can still expect an impressive spectacle as the moon passes by, blocking an estimated 98% of the sun.

Jorge Santana, Director of the Webb County Historical Commission, emphasizes the significance of this event, stating, “The eclipse is an event that happens about every 50 years so we’re not going to see it until 54, 55 years from now so imagine if we don’t see it right now, we’re probably not going to see the other one. So let’s do it together. Let’s celebrate this historic moment at a historic house like Casa Ortiz.”

For a fee of $5, attendees can join the watch party and receive eclipse glasses, along with complimentary snacks and beverages. Casa Ortiz is located at 915 Zaragoza Street in downtown Laredo, next to San Agustin Cathedral. You can contact them at (956) 326-3200.

I-27 expansion could link highways from Amarillo to Laredo

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - I-35, a major artery through Texas, may soon be linked to another significant highway, extending nearly 600 miles away, following recent legislative actions.

U.S. lawmakers from Texas have passed a bill to extend I-27, currently passing through Amarillo and Lubbock, potentially connecting it to Laredo.

Truck driver Raul Vasquez, with over 30 years of experience, welcomed the prospect, envisioning potential benefits for his profession. “That would be nice if I can get home quicker,” Vasquez remarked. “It would be safer because there was a lot of traffic in the past on the oil field and business, and there have been a lot of accidents.”

The expansion could allow drivers to use Highway 83 to reach cities like Carrizo Springs and even Eagle Pass, extending to states like New Mexico.

Texas lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, expressed support for the proposal, emphasizing its potential for job creation and economic growth. “Texans want jobs, we want higher wages, we want better opportunities for our kids and grandkids,” Senator Cruz stated. “One of the critical elements to having jobs is creating an environment where small businesses can prosper.”

Congressman Henry Cuellar also endorsed the plan, known as the Ports-to-Plains Corridor, highlighting its anticipated job creation and economic benefits. “The highway will create 17,000 jobs across the state,” Cuellar stated. “This project will also become the only port of entry with four interstate corridors, including I-35, I-2, I-69, and the highly anticipated new stretch for I-27.”

While awaiting the President’s signature, truck drivers like Vasquez remain hopeful for the project’s realization, expecting it to ease their journeys across Texas.
