LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - People living in the southern part of the U.S.-Mexico border live the migrant crisis a little different than what an outsider might think.
Recently, Texas Senator Judith Zaffirini and other border state senators wrote a letter addressing the border security issue in border towns.
For Venezuelan Migrants like Ionny Alexander Gonzalez Zapata, the road is long and difficult before reaching the U.S-Mexico border.
Ionny traveled for seven months through South America into Mexico and recalls eating leftover food scraps from garbage cans.
He finally researched the U.S. after escaping the violence in his home country.
Ionny said that his father was killed, he was shot in the arm, and delinquent groups set his home on fire.
He made the trek to the U.S with his wife who is currently detained.
Separated from her, Zapata is at the Holding Institute.
Ionny said the movie is not what it seems. The border is very different from the journey, seeking refuge, and being in the country legally.
He is just one of many people that are currently crossing the border.
Mike Smith, the executive director for the Holdings Institute said the non-governmental organization has been seeing less migrants recently.
“So, let’s say 150 people per day now that sounds like a big number, but we have had days in the past with over a thousand people a day,” said Smith.
He expects a surge during the summertime and closer to Election Day in November.
During the surges is when these non-governmental entities need all the help they can get.
Recently, Texas State Senator Judith Zaffirini and other Texas border senators wrote a letter about the border security issue.
Zaffirini said bipartisan collaboration needs to happen in order to get more technology, infrastructure, and updated safety procedures in the southern border.
“We need collaboration among all levels of government what happens so many times is that one level of government will work and not consult the other government officials or people who live far away who don’t understand the problems of the border offer solutions that aren’t realist,” said Zaffirini.
This call-to-action urges lawmakers to come up with a solution for the migrant influx and even though it may be low at this time, if a surge happens it could overwhelm border communities like Laredo.
Senator Zaffirini said in Laredo, government leaders have good communication but this needs to happen statewide for a change to be done.
