Two in critical condition following New Year’s Day Morning crash in south Laredo

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Two people are in critical condition after a New Year’s Day morning crash in south Laredo, where emergency units responded to the collision at Lomas del Sur and South Ejido.

Upon arrival, crews discovered a two-vehicle collision. A 27-year-old female passenger was found unresponsive on the ground with a pulse and breathing, suffering from multiple injuries, and was transported in critical condition to a Laredo hospital, according to the Laredo Police Department.

The 24-year-old female driver of the other vehicle, who was able to walk at the scene, had a laceration to her forehead and was also transported in critical condition to LMC. The 24-year-old male driver and 23-year-old female passenger from the F-250 refused treatment or transport.

The incident is under investigation.

Two Laredo high school students accused of hazing released on bond

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - Two students arrested for alleged hazing at a Laredo high school are out on bond.

According to Webb County documents, Matthew Rabago, 17, and David Cardenas, 17, were arrested on Dec. 20 and were released on bond the same day.

Rabago is accused of harassment, and two counts of assault causing bodily injury.

As for Cardenas, he is facing only one count of assault causing bodily injury.

Both students are from United High School.

It’s unclear whether Rabago and Cardenas are connected to an incident reported in early October involving several boys who had reported being hazed by teammates at a United ISD school.

Former Jailer admits to sexually assaulting women

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A former Webb County Jailer, who initially pleaded not guilty in February to violating the civil rights of two women jailed, has now changed his plea.

Hector Humberto Rodriguez Jr. was a correctional officer with the Webb County Sheriff’s Department during the time of the offenses.

Rodriguez pleaded guilty to removing both victims from their cell and assaulting them in a secluded area.

The U.S. District Attorney’s Office, who prosecuted the case, released a statement calling Rodriguez, “The worst kind of predator, one who abused his authority, praying upon some of the most vulnerable women in our community.”

While sentencing is at a later date, Rodriguez could face up to life in prison for both convictions.

April 2021 Murder Trial Starts in January 2025

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The trial for the man accused of the third murder of 2021 is set to begin next year in January 2025

According to the Webb County docket, the trial for Anthony Tays Jr. is set for Monday, January 13th, 2025

Tays is accused of killing Jaime Leal Rodriguez on April 5, 2021, after a fight at a Laredo reception hall.

On the day of the confrontation, police found five men injured at the 4500 block of McPherson Road; the sixth man was identified as Rodriguez who died from his injuries.

The trial is scheduled to take place in the 341st District Court.

Man turns himself in for alleged assault at a house party

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A man with a prior arrest history turned himself in to Laredo Police in connection to an alleged assault at a house party.

On Friday, December 27, a warrant was issued for 25-year-old Daniel Palomo Jr. for aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.

The warrant was issued after the case had been presented to Justice of the Peace, Juan Paz, who set a bond of $30,000.

The case is related to an alleged assault that took place on December 22 during a house party.

During the party, a 24-year-old male sustained serious injuries to his face, causing him to be transported to a hospital in San Antonio.

Palomo turned himself in at the Laredo Police Department Headquarters.

KGNS records show Palomo was arrested back in October 2018 as a suspect in a gas station assault.

His attorney, at the time, told KGNS that Palomo was acting in self-defense.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Crash on Mines Road backs up traffic

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - A two-car crash near San Lorenzo Drive and Mines Road is causing heavy traffic Friday evening, December 27, police said.

The accident happened just before 6 p.m. One of the cars ended up partly on a pole. Police said everyone got out of the cars, and no serious injuries were reported.

Northbound lanes in the area are backed up as traffic delays grow. Drivers are asked to avoid the area while the scene is cleared.

No other details have been released.

Crash in central Laredo leaves two cars damaged

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - Two cars were damaged in a crash Friday morning, December 27 in central Laredo.

The crash happened around 9 a.m. on Guadalupe and Bartlett Streets, near a bank parking lot. The video shows two white cars with damage next to a streetlight.

Laredo police were at the scene helping those involved and guiding traffic.

It is not clear if anyone was hurt. More details will be shared as they come in.
