LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Crews with the City of Laredo were out in full force Wednesday assessing some of the damage left by what was Tropical Storm Harold.
Many different parts of town were affected by the rain, some harder than others, whether it was flooding or debris from downed trees or branches.
State and city crews were busy fixing and cleaning the damage for several hours.
Repairs started as soon as the rain stopped.
TxDOT crews were out fixing potholes that were made on city streets.
Clean up efforts were also going on at North Central Park Wednesday morning.
Parks and recreation staff were cleaning the walkways and picking up the debris in the people’s path.
Officials say the storm was not as bad as previous years.
“We had officers out there directing traffic in the main in the main intersections that were flooded,” said Jose Espinoza. “We had to do some closures along the loop to prevent accidents and further flooding, so I think we had a good turnout. We worked closely with the Laredo fire department and the city to prevent further accidents.”
Luckily, according to the police department, there were no major accidents reported in Laredo.
They accredit this to school closures and businesses closing early.
City crews will be keeping with their clean-up efforts for the rest of the day.

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - Tuesday was a busy day for first responders in Laredo as they continued to monitor the streets to keep drivers and residents safe from the rising waters.
While Laredo Police and fire officials were busy monitoring the roads, one Laredoan risked his own life to help someone in need.
Alexis Andrade was heading home from a doctor’s visit right in the middle of Tuesday evening’s storm.
While Alexis was on the road, another vehicle caught his attention.
“I saw that a car was flooded, it was getting flooded, and I didn’t think about it so much until I saw the lady press the breaks,” said Andrade.
Without hesitation Alexis went into the flooded street on South Ejido Ave. and La Terraza Way.
Alexis said he got out of the car with his umbrella that ended up near the creek.
“Let me go help out I didn’t think about my life I didn’t think about anything. I just saw someone needed my help and I did god’s work,” said Andrade.
Alexis said the water in the area was right below his chest and moving at a rapid pace.
When he approached the car, he noticed there was rising water inside the car, he then quickly opened the door.
“She was crying for help, and I took her out and took her to my car and waited for cops and fireman to get there,” said Andrade.
He said he returned to the car to see if anybody else was in there, luckily nobody else was in danger.
This wasn’t the only rescue that took place, the Laredo Fire Department reported 10 rescues throughout the Gateway City; eight of those were vehicle rescues and two were structure rescues.
Rescues took place along Zapata Highway and Jacaman Road.
The Laredo Police Department urges people to stay home during heavy rainstorms since this could be of great danger in areas where are prone to flooding.
“If you see water that high make sure to stop and think about it twice so you don’t get stuck or have an accident, we all want to go back to our families,” said Andrade.
Alexis went on to say this experience changed his life forever. The woman he rescued has since then reached out to him saying she is very grateful he saved her life.
As for the car, it was left at the scene of the flooded area.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - It’s a popular, well-known downtown attraction-- Iturbide Street.
It has become the epicenter for downtown’s bars and restaurants.
On Monday’s agenda, one council member was looking to close “It Street” down to traffic in order to promote Laredo’s nightlife.
The growing part of downtown Laredo has become the center for many staple celebrations--from St. Patrick’s Day to pride--Iturbide Street has hosted it all.
With its gaining popularity, Councilwoman Alyssa Cigarroa wants the street that houses several bars and restaurants to continue its growth.
Cigarroa is proposing Iturbide St. to be closed to traffic two nights of the week--Friday and Saturday night.
In a statement provided to KGNS, Councilmember Cigarroa told us, “This proposed initiative is to foster a safer and more vibrant environment for all who visit Iturbide during the weekends. This endeavor not only prioritizes the safety of our community but also presents an opportunity to transform public space into pedestrian-friendly places. Our intention is to improve the overall experience when visiting downtown. Ideally -- the street would be turned into a pedestrian walkway making it safer for those in the area.”
In Monday’s meeting, the city council agreed with the proposal.
It Street will be closed from 7:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. to vehicular traffic on Fridays and Saturdays.
However, there is no official word on when the changes will be implemented.
According to the council, no residential area will be affected and the closure will affect the area from Santa Ursula to Convent Street.
LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - The five finalists looking to fill the role of the Laredo Chief of Police gathered at the department for a meet-and-greet with officers and the public.
The candidates in question include Andy Harvey, Manuel Maciel, Miguel Rodriguez, Ricardo Gonzalez, and Tom Whitten.
Of the current candidate pool, three are locals and the other two, Harvey and Whitten, are from out of town.
City Manager Joseph Neeb talked about the prospect of hiring from within or getting someone who brings a different perspective saying, “We want to select the best candidate, and I think that’s going to be the idea. There is a benefit to bringing somebody from the outside, with fresh ideas. But there’s also that benefit of the stability that an internal candidate can bring, so we’re gonna look at all of that. We’re balancing through all of that as we interview. The nice thing is that we’re letting a lot of people interact with our candidates, and so, with any luck, we’ll have a really good selection at the end of that.”
The last series of interviews for the position will be on August 30th and 31st before the final selection is made
