WEBB COUNTY, TX (KGNS) - Webb County Commissioners met to discuss upgrades and renovations to the fairgrounds.

On Friday, Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina spoke about some of the potential projects and ideas for the county fairgrounds.

Judge Tijerina said the reason why the project has been delayed is due to price increases on construction materials after the pandemic.

The judge said the project has started with some phases such as a new arena, upgrades on the fairground’s parking, and some current facilities.

“We deserve it, the quality of life and everybody is looking at, you know, a lot of people don’t understand that you know, “Take your horse blinders off”, and when I mean by that it’s not just about cowboys,” said Judge Tijerina. “Right now, we brought a brand new department that has been more of a money maker, it’s a quality of life, and I think it’s important to able to do something for the next 40 to 50 years to be able to utilize that is something that is much needed.”

The judge said the project could be ready by 2025.

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) -Catholics and Christians around the world are celebrating Ash Wednesday.

Often called the ‘Day of Ashes’, it marks the start of the Lenten season, a 40-day period that represents Christ’s time of temptation.

Lent asks believers to set aside a time each year to focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.

Another tradition recognized during the Lenten season is not consuming meat on Fridays.

This year, Ash Wednesday also falls on Valentine’s Day.

Laredo ISD and United ISD issue guidelines for Valentine’s Day

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Love birds of all age are getting ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but before you purchase gifts for your loved ones, Laredo school districts are reminding parents and students about what is not allowed on school grounds.

Valentine’s Day is one the busiest days of the year for flowers shops in the Gateway City and Carmin’s Flower and Gift Shop is no exception.

They have been hard at work preparing all of their orders for the most romantic time of the year.

Store owner Hector Garcia has been working around the clock to make sure everything is ready for February 14.

According to Garcia the most purchased items include roses with chocolate candy, as well as teddy bears with candy.

Garcia said they have been open for over 50 years now and they have seen similar trends in the gifts that are being purchased.

“It’s a combination from the older generation and the younger generation,” said Garica. “The younger generation, they order the bears and the candies. The older generations order the dozens of roses or two dozens of roses so that is the trend we have been seeing.”

However, if you are thinking about sending a Valentin to someone at a school campus, both Laredo ISD and United ISD are making it clear about some of the items students and faculty are not able to receive.

For starters, UISD is telling their students and faculty members that they are not accepting any deliveries.

Meanwhile over at Laredo ISD, they will allow deliveries to their campuses for its students and faculty; however, there are some rules such as no singing telegrams.

Deliveries must be made during the hours of 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and gifts must be a reasonable size.

Gifts to students delivered will be distributed to students during the afternoon hours and all food items delivered must be store bought and not homemade.

All Valentine’s Day items must be taken home at the end of the day.

Below is LISD’S Valentine’s Day Delivery Safety Protocols

Valentine’s Day is a special day for the LISD community. However, to further enhance our safety

culture during these types of holidays, LISD is fine-tuning Valentines’ Day delivery protocols.

Expectations are that all visitor procedures are followed as a Standard Operating Procedure. Please

ensure the following:

Deliveries to LISD Campuses

• Delivery of Valentine gifts (flowers, candies, balloons, etc.) by vendors, parents and other

visitors will only be allowed at each LISD campus between 8:00 am and 11:00 am.

• A preferred delivery method and best practice is to set up a table monitored by staff to receive

all deliveries.

• Ensure campus visitor management safety protocols are followed at all times.

• No singing telegrams allowed.

• Gifts must be of reasonable size, must not be breakable, and must be clearly and firmly marked

with the student recipient’s name, teacher’s name, and grade. Gifts with balloons will not be

allowed on school buses as they could pose a hazard to the drivers and passengers.

• The name and contact information of the florist/company delivering the gift to the school must

also be included.

• LISD is not responsible or liable for any misplaced or damaged merchandise.

Deliveries of Gifts to Students

Only campus personnel are permitted to make classroom deliveries to students.

• Deliver and distribute gifts to students in the afternoon.

• No head mask/covering allowed at any time.

• Students are not allowed to share any non-wrapped food items.

• All food items must be store bought and not homemade.

• Any balloon/flower arrangements are to be taken home at the end of the school day.

Note: Balloons left overnight in our classrooms and offices can trigger the burglar alarm at night due to movement.
