LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - The City of Laredo is opening two of its recreation centers for those who are without power and are in need of space to cool off.
The city said it will open its doors at the El Eden Recreation Center located at 4735 Loma Vista Dr. as well as the Cigarroa Recreation Center on 2201 Zacatecas Street.
Residents who do not have power can stop by any of the two rec centers for temporary relief from the hot and humid conditions.
The rec center hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
In addition, the City of Laredo also announced that one of its libraries is closed due to a power outage. All services, events and programs at the Sophie Christen McKendrick Francisco Ochoa Fernando A. Salinas Library are suspended until power can be restored.
4,000 residents still without power following Tuesday’s storm, AEP says

LAREDO, Tx. (KGNS) - Over 4,000 residents in the Laredo and Webb County area are still without power after a severe thunderstorm battered parts of south Texas.
On Tuesday, May 28, a severe thunderstorm damaged, trees, homes and powerlines in the Laredo area.
According to AEP, roughly 13,000 residents were without power after about 10 p.m.
Crews worked through the night and restored electricity to 10,000 of those households; however, another outage continues to affect 4,500 residents.
Some of the areas include, Highway 359, Killam Industrial Park and near Guadalupe Street.
An AEP official started that they are bringing in more workers to help restore power.
Rolando ‘Role’ San Miguel, projected winner of Webb County Constable for Precinct 4

WEBB COUNTY, TX (KGNS) - The results are in and it show that Rolando “Role” San Miguel is the projected winner of the race for Webb County Constable for Precinct 4.
Based off final un-official results released by the Webb County Elections Office, San Miguel received 3,387 votes making up 58 percent of the votes; meanwhile, Tina Guerra received 2,466 votes totaling 42 percent of the votes.
San Miguel is expected to take the helm of the office after former Webb County Constable for Precinct 4 announced his bid for Webb County Sheriff.
San Miguel has 27 years of law enforcement experience with the Laredo Police Department.
He has a Master Police Officer Certificate, he’s a firearm instructor, and currently works with ATF Task Force.
Jay Furman to face Rep. Henry Cuellar in the race for District 28

LAREDO, TX. (KGNS) - Jay Furman, the Republican candidate for the 28th Congressional District is expected to face off against Rep. Henry Cuellar in November.
Furman is the projected winner of the Republican Primary runoff election on Tuesday night with 64 percent of the votes beating Lazaro Garza Jr.’s 36 percent.
Furman grew up in Austin and lives in San Antonio and started his career as a pilot for the Texas National Guard and the U.S. Navy.
His campaign consists of securing the border, international trade-based economy focused on U.S. manufacturing oil and agriculture.
If elected, Furman hopes to protect businesses by lowering taxes, reduce regulations and increase bilateral trade with Mexico.
Furman is expected to face incumbent Congressman Henry Cuellar in the November election.
Cuellar said that despite the federal indictment, he will be running in November.
Election Day is set to take place on Nov. 5.
WEBB COUNTY, TX . (KGNS) - The race for Webb County Constable Precinct 4 continues as both Tina Guerra and Rolando “Role” San Miguel are vying for the empty seat.
The office was previously held by Harold Devally since 2012; however, Devally stepped down in 2023 after he announced his bid for Webb County Sheriff.
During the March Primary Election, Guerra and Miguel received more votes than Ponce Trevino, but neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the votes resulting in a runoff.
Both candidates have years of law enforcement experience on their belt and hope to bring new ideas to the office of Webb County Constable Precinct 4.

As of now, officials say the fire remains under investigation and that no injuries were reported.

The fire was reported on Tuesday, May 28, at around 10 a.m. near Carriers Drive and South Unitec Drive.
According to a Laredo Fire official, the building is covered in flames, but the fire is under control.
Fire officials have been working with the utilities department to provide fire units with enough water to extinguish the flames.
According to employees at the business, everyone was able to evacuate the building before the fire.
According to the Laredo Fire Department, the fire has been contained; however, firefighters are making sure the fire doesn’t start again due to the high temperatures.
Laredo Police have closed all eastbound traffic on Carriers and I-35.
Drivers are being advised to expect long delays as a result of the fire.
