LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - An accident happened in north Laredo’s Winfield area, where a car crashed with a tree, resulting in damage to the car and the tree.

It happened on Thursday, July 27, shortly after 10 a.m. near the intersection of Winfield Parkway and Windmill Drive. Reports from the scene indicate that the impact of the collision caused the vehicle to come to a rest in the median. Paramedics arrived to assess the situation and provide medical aid as needed.

The intensity of the crash was evident from the deployed airbags inside the car and the chunks of the tree’s bark embedded in the vehicle’s exterior. The car sustained significant damage, with noticeable scratches along its sides and a visibly bent-in hood.

Despite the extent of damages, there were no reported injuries at the scene. However, as authorities investigated the situation further, they learned that the driver had no license. Laredo police confirmed that the driver would receive a citation.

LAREDO, Tex. (KGNS) - One infrastructure project hoping to alleviate traffic along Loop 20 is moving along.

The expansion project on the loop is part of the U.S.-59 upgrade project.

Part of the project includes a part near the Lake Casa Blanca Park and golf course.

TxDOT says they are working with the county as they work on their part in re-designing the golf course in that area.

All signs point to steady progress.

Raul Leal with TxDOT said, “Naturally we work together with the county as they start re-doing the redesign of their golf course to allow for the expansion and the right-of-way that we need. That’s how it works, but we’re working together on it and I know that the county has taken action to grant us access and those are all good things so we can move this project forward.”

Leal went on to say that traffic will be impacted in the short term when the project starts.

WEBB COUNTY, Tex. (KGNS) - A surge in overdose deaths has been reported in Webb County, with one precinct bearing the brunt of this tragic trend. According to authorities, there have been a total of 197 overdose reports so far this year, with a distressing toll of 43 lives lost. Of these deaths, a staggering 39 have been linked to the potent synthetic opioid, Fentanyl.

More than half of these fatal overdoses have occurred within Precinct One, raising alarm bells among law enforcement and local officials. Even more concerning is the youngest victim in this epidemic, a fifteen-year-old whose life was tragically cut short due to a drug overdose.

Guadalupe Gomez, the Webb County Constable for Precinct One, expressed deep concern about the situation and called for unity in tackling this pressing issue. Gomez stated, “It is an issue that should concern our entire community. We should work together to make things better, especially if you have children. It is important to be extra vigilant with them; if you see them heading in the wrong direction, try to help them out and get them back on track.”

In response to the escalating crisis, local authorities have taken action by forming an Overdose Task Force comprising members from the Laredo Police Department, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and other relevant agencies. The task force aims to collaboratively address the issue and implement comprehensive strategies to combat drug abuse and prevent further loss of lives.

WEBB COUNTY, Tex. (KGNS) - Ronald Anthony Burgos Avilés, the former United States Border Patrol agent convicted of the murders of Grizelda Hernandez and his own son, was transferred to Huntsville State Penitentiary in Huntsville, Texas, early this morning. The prison will be his home for the rest of his life, as he will serve two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.

The verdict was handed down by a jury in the 49th State District Court in Laredo last week, finding Burgos Aviles guilty of the crimes.

Authorities arrested Burgos-Aviles on April 10, 2018, after the lifeless bodies of his victims, Hernandez and his son, were discovered near Fr. Charles McNaboe Park, off Mines Road. Since his arrest, he had been confined to the Webb County Jail for a total of 1,934 days before being transported to the Huntsville prison at 4 a.m. on Wednesday, July 26.

Handling the transfer of the high-risk inmate was the Sheriff’s Office Special Tactical Team. Sheriff Martin Cuellar expressed relief and satisfaction with the outcome of the trial. “We are relieved that he will now be serving justice for the innocent lives he so cowardly cut short,” said Sheriff Cuellar. “He is heading where he belongs. He will pay for these crimes.”

Ronald Anthony Burgos Avilés will now face the consequences of his actions behind bars for the remainder of his life.
